About
Words are navigation tools.
The Compass Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that teaches 10- and 11-year-olds that intentional speech is a learnable skill — and that the moral compass starts in the mouth.
Our mission
To give young students the moral and linguistic True North to navigate a complex world.
We started in a single classroom with a toothpaste tube, a list of cruel words, and a toothpick. The exercise: Squeeze a small blob of toothpaste out of the tube each time you repeat one of the harmful words. Now take the toothpick and try to insert the toothpaste back into the tube. The kids quickly realize you can’t. Watching their faces make the connection that the toothpaste, just like their words can never go back to the way it was. This was the moment we knew this needed a curriculum, a method, and a name.
Three pilot schools underway and now we’re building toward a future where every 5th grader graduates elementary school with a working compass for hard conversations.
What we believe
Four principles that shape every lesson.
Direction over discipline
We don’t punish kids for the wrong words — we teach them how to find the right ones.
Sincerity is a skill
A meaningful apology requires practice. We make space for that practice.
Kids teach kids
The most lasting change in a school comes from peer-led culture, not adult lectures.
Measure what matters
If we can’t show it on a school’s discipline data, we don’t claim impact.
Our team
The people pointing north.
